Assignment 4: ProQuest

ProQuest reminds me a little of the old days when we went to the library to read articles in magazines and periodicals. Here are all of those magazines and periodicals - on line now, not on the shelves. I decided to research primary biliary cirrhosis - an auto-imune disease my husband was diagnosed with in 1994. I looked at only information published in the past 12 months because I wanted to see what recent research might have discovered about this mysterious disease. I chose an article that looked promising. At first it looked daunting because of all the medical jargon, but as I began to read I realized that I understand most of this jargon because I have heard it and read it so much over the past 16 years! It was full of language I never dreamed I'd understand or know anything about! I read through the article only to learn that there doesn't appear to be any new information on this disease - at least according to this article. PBC attacks the bile ducts of liver; it presents in middle-aged people - usually women!; there is no cure, but some medications appear to slow the progress; eventually a liver transplant is needed; without a transplant the disease is always fatal. My husband had a living-donor transplant 6 years ago and is healthy today!
When my husband was first diagnosed I did lots and lots of research to learn everything I could about PBC, but now I want to find only the newest information to get updates on recent research. ProQuest works well for any kind of search a person wants to do.

  1. Thanks for teaching me about a disease I knew nothing about! So glad to hear that your husband is doing well now. Thanks for trying this search in ProQuest. We agree that because of its breadth of coverage for popular to trade to scholarly publications, ProQuest does work for any kind of search!

  2. Your post reminded me of the days when we relied on the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature when doing research. I really think that Proquest is an improvement, too.
